Karis Acker is like any other 14 year old. She likes to play on her tablet, watch TV and read. But this funny, sweet, loving, girl has had many struggles in life starting at birth. Karis was diagnosed with autism, mild cerebral palsy and facial nerve damage. She endures many doctors’ appointments and therapies; including PT, OT, and speech therapy that started at six months old through it all her doctors have called this brave young girl “A Rock Star!”

On February 1, 2018, after having suffered multiple strokes, she was diagnosed with Moyamoya Disease. Moyamoya is a rare, progressive cerebrovascular disorder caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain in an area called the basal ganglia.

The name Moyamoya means “puff of smoke” in Japanese and describes the look of the tangle of tiny vessels formed to compensate for the blockage. Karis had her first brain surgery March 9, 2018. When she was being wheeled into the operating room, Karis looked at her mom and dad, gave the thumbs up sign, and said, “we got this!”

Karis needs daily monitoring because she is at high risk of having more strokes. She requires regular scans and tests and may need further brain surgeries in the years to come.
