New survey shows best, worst Christmas songs

Did you know The Spice Girls and Madonna have their own versions of classic Christmas songs? According to a new survey, "Christmas Wrapping" by The Spice Girls and Madonna's interpretation of "Santa Baby" are considered two of the worst holiday songs ever recorded.

Yes, there really are surveys for this kind of thing, and because WOLX is currently all-Christmas all-the-time, the results caught our attention. Jim and I talked about the poll, recently done by grocery store owners who were trying to figure out which songs to play -- and not play -- for shoppers during the holidays. You can hear our on-air conversation, along with more of the survey results, below.

Some of the tunes, like Gene Autry's "Here Comes Santa Claus" which made the worst list, and best list finalist "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band Aid, are a bit of a surprise for those of us listening to these songs on a regular rotation. But even Alvin and The Chipmunks, also relegated to the naughty list, has its fans. One listener called to say their "The Christmas Song," reminds him of holidays when he was a kid. And he told us he remembers finding a 45 RPM of the song along with a record player under the tree a long time ago, but whenever he hears "The Christmas Song," it takes him back there like it was yesterday.

Maybe that's the coolest thing about this time of year. Recalling the memories made during years in the past, while making new memories to enjoy in the future. And all thanks to the power of a song.

Now, here are the results, starting with the worst:

The Christmas Song, Alvin and the Chipmunks

The Christmas Song, David Hasselhoff

Christmas Wrapping, The Spice Girls

Christmas Tree, Lady Gaga

Santa Baby, Madonna

Santa's Beard, The Beach Boys

A Wonderful Christmas Time, Paul McCartney & Wings

Jingle Bell Rock, Billy Idol

Here Comes Santa Claus, Gene Autry

Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Bruce Springsteen

And some of the songs making the best list in the survey:

Last Christmas, Wham!

Do They Know It's Christmas, Band Aid

All I Want For Christmas Is You, Maria Carey

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas, Perry Como

Rocking around the Christmas Tree, Brenda Lee

Walking In A Winter Wonderland, Dean Martin

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Ella Fitzgerald

Step Into Christmas, Elton John

Happy Christmas (War is Over), John Lennon

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Gene Autry
